2nd semester slc
Moments of pride & struggle:
MOMENT OF PRIDE #1-
I would have to say that the thing I am most proud of would have to be designing and being able to build my lapdesk. I really felt like I was being a real engineer throughout the entire process because I had to do a lot of critical thinking and planning. When I first started to design my lapdesk, I made blueprints with the exact measurements of the desk as well as all of the features that I wanted it to have. Once I actually started building my lapdesk, I was very proud of myself for being able to build it all by myself with the minimal amount of help from others. It was a really cool experience to be able to learn how to use different tools and watching how each tools helped me get that much closer to my final goal. |
MOMENT OF PRIDE #2-
While working on my lap desk, I came across a lot of obstacles that got in the way of my completing my design. However, through the use of critical thinking and creative problem solving, I was able to overcome all of the obstacles that I faced. For example, when I first lazer cut all of mhy parts, I found that the wood was morphed and would not fit perfectly together. So I put bricks on them to weigh them down with the hopes that the heaviness of the bricks would straighten out the wood. Also, when I was making the hinge that would allow me to lift up one side of my lapdesk ( the "lawnchair hing"), I had to think of new ways to cut the grooves so that they would fit/work. Even when some of my friends had problems with their parallel projects, I would go out of my way to help them in whichever way I could. |
MOMENT OF STRUGGLE #1-
I would have to say that the things I have struggled with the most this semester would be actually being able to meet the deadlines I set for myself. There have been a lot of instances where, for one reason or another, I was not able to complete a certain project or part of a project by the date that I set. I think it has to do with the fact that whenever I come across a problem or obstacle, it takes me a bit to think of a way to get past it or overcome the problem. I am still very new to engineering, and although I do practice critical thinking and problem solving on a daily basis, I have never had to apply those skills to problems that have to do with power tools or building. And because critical thinking and problem solving play such a big role in overcoming problems that I face in this class, I sometimes have trouble coming up with solutions quickly, and that in turn slows me down and prevents me from meeting deadlines.

explaination of growth:
WHAT IS THE CGA (CORE GROWTH AREA) YOU HAVE GROWN IN?
Action
HOW HAVE YOU STRUGGLED WITH THIS CORE GROWTH AREA?
At the beginning of the year, when I was still very new to engineering, I was not really used to having to constantly be on my feet and thinking and problem solving for the things that I faced in this class. I had never really had to design, prototype, and build as much as I have in this class, so it has taken me a while to be able to get used to working at the pace of engineering class.
WHAT IS A SPECIFIC MOMENT IN CLASS THAT PUSHED YOU IN THIS CORE GROWTH AREA?
I would have to say that the moment that pushed me to grow in this core growth area would be when I saw/ admired my miniature prototype of my lapdesk. It got me so excited to be working on this project and made me eager to work, build, and refine my design until I reached my final product. It was also a very proud moment for me to see the work that I had created and to realize that I had built and designes something all by myself. It really made me want to see what more I could accomplish.
HOW HAVE YOU IMPROVED IN USING THIS CGA AFTER THE ABOVE EXPERIENCE? HOW HAVE YOUR HABITS CHANGED?
After going through the experience I talked about above, I felt really eager and excited to get to work on my lap desk because I wanted to see my finished product. I also found it a lot easier to come to class excited, ready to work, and ready to come up with solutions to the obstacles that I faced when I was building/ doing something that I was really excited/passionate about.
HOW HAS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THIS CGA CHANGED? HOW HAS IT CHANGED HOW YOU DEFINE GROWTH?
I used to think of action as an attribute to someone who was always working really hard and taking a lead on projects. Now I see that there is a lot more that goes into action that I had originally thought. Action is about doing something that you are passionate or excited about and doing it to your fullest ability. It is about enjoying what you are doing, working hard at it, and not letting anything come between you and creating your final product. Critical thinking and creative problem solving also go hand in hand with this CGA.

goals for the rest of the year:
If I am being completely honest, I would really love to be able to finish my lap desk, for starters, but also create a lot of other things that will be helpful for me to have in college. Whether I choose to create a shelf so that I can be more organized, or to make a picture frame with an HTHCV logo on it so that I can remember this place, I want to be able to look around my dorm and remember all of the amazing things that I learned and accomplished and how much I grew throughout the years. And if that means that I have ti stay in during lunch, come in after school, or take my work home, I am willing to put in the hard work and time so that I can create these amazing things.
