I Will Never Know Why
By Susan Klebold
HOMEWORK QUESTIONS
1. What connections can you make between what you saw and heard from the Newtown Families on 60 Minutes and “I Will Never Know Why”?
-The main connection that I think that I can make between these two pieces is the fact that all of the families, like Susan Klebold, cannot understand the mindset of a killer and what caused them to do what they did. All of them are concerned with what mental health has to do with these killings.
2. What insight does “I Will Never Know Why” give us into WHY the Columbine massacre happened and how it could have been prevented?
-Mrs. Klebold stated in her writing piece that looking back at all of the little thing (little comments, actions, the tone of his voice), she can actually notice that something was wrong with Dylan. However, she did not know or even imagine that this would happen as a result. She said that Dylan did not like his school, and that he had already gotten arrested when. She swore that Eric was not a very good influence on Dylan, because when they were together, because they did stupid things together- but she never though that they would try to blow up a school and kill hundreds of people together.
3. If you could speak to Susan Klebold, what would you tell or ask her? Why?
-If I could speak to Susan klebold, I would ask her what she thought about Eric, and mainly what his influence was on Dylan, as well as if Dylan was the kind of person who would easily give into peer pressure. I would ask this because this could be the thing that would make Dylan a bit less innocent for the crime, in my opinion. It would sound better if people knew that he was pressured into doing what he did just because he wanted to commit suicide anyways than if he truly wanted to hurt people.
4. If you could speak with a criminal psychologist about Eric and Dylan, what would you ask her/him? Why?
-I would ask him/her what his/her opinion was about Eric being a sociopath. A lot of scientists and authorities believe that he was, however, I do not think that it is a certain diagnosis (and will probably never be because he is dead and we wouldn’t be able to prove it). This would be able to clarify his motives a bit more if we knew that there was something wrong mentally.
5. What else do you feel like you have to write or say about this piece by Susan Klebold?
-I honestly feel such respect towards Susan Klebold for having the courage to do all of this and tell her courageous story about her son, and honestly the way she handled everything, from what I have read, made it seem like she was truly sorry and understanding of everything that happened.
