Personal Statement
Growing up with and being a part of a big family can be very difficult, especially when everyone in the family has some sort of expectation as to how your life should or is going to turn out. In my family, it was the men that were expected to go far and graduate from college with a higher level degree. It was always the men who were expected to provide for their families; because that was the way it had always been in my family. The surprising part is that only three women, at least as far as I am aware of, in my entire family have received an education higher than their GED’s or high school diplomas. My goal is to be the fourth woman in my family to get a good education, and not only that, but to be the first successful lawyer in the family as well. I have been working extremely hard to keep a good status amongst my family- I have to be the determined one, the driven one, the one who knows where her life is going. I am the one that has to set an example to my younger brothers and be the person they can look up to. Actually, I want to be the person they can look up to. I feel like the only way they will want to succeed in life is if they have someone to look up to as an example. I strive to be that person through being a good role model around the house, but also by excelling in my studies. That is why I have set nothing but the highest educational and personal standards of myself. I have always been a very motivated student, always eager to learn. I hope that one day my hard work will pay off, and I will be able to attend a university that will amply prepare me for going into my dream career in the law field. After graduating, I wish to partner with a highly esteemed and successful law firm where I will be able to grow as a professional woman and utilize my skills and knowledge while being offered a chance of development both intellectually and professionally. I strive to be the strong independent young woman my family knows I can be. It is because of them that I have already come so far. Their motivation pushes me to continue my studies with the goal of being accepted to such a school that would give me all the skills necessary for the field I wish to go into. It gives give me a small push towards the greatness that I wish and know I can achieve. It enables me to step that much closer to being one of the first women in my family to get accepted into a “top-notch” university and make my family proud. I want to be the strong, self-reliant, and independent young woman that my family members can look at with admiration and high respect.
