BEYOND THE CROSSFIRE
TEAM PROJECT/ DOCUMENTARY
This year, students in Matt Simon’s 11th grade humanities class and Nuvia Ruland’s 11th grade biology class will engage in a year-long, interdisciplinary study in which they’ll research and answer two questions:
My team, along with our teachers Mr. Simon and Mrs. Nuvia, has decided to exhibit our learning and experience in a documentary we produce which tells our story: the story of 45 students who are tired of losing people they know to the literal crossfire of bullets and tired of passively witnessing the political crossfire over gun rights versus gun control. The documentary will focus on the sour determination to expand the conversation about gun violence beyond the 2nd Amendment to include mental health care, video games, parenting, school reform, the way we raise our boys, our criminal justice system, unemployment, socioeconomic inequality, and federal, state and local budget priorities. In the end, we hope our documentary will rally young Americans and all Americans to work together to make the changes necessary to prevent gun violence and make our communities safer.
We will raise money for the production and distribution of our documentary on Kickstarter (see our link below). Prior to launching our 45-day Kickstarter fundraising campaign, we will engage in a Marketing Bootcamp based on the latest trends in marketing, including the principles shared in Likeable Social Media by Dave Kerpen.
Once we have raised money for our research project/documentary, we will write exploratory research papers based on the two guiding questions noted above. Our hope is that during the research phase we will explore the connections between violence and mental health, video games, parenting, school reform, the way we raise our boys, our criminal justice system, unemployment, budget priorities and socioeconomic inequality by reading a ton (about these topics and about nonviolence), thinking a ton and interviewing experts in the field, people affected by gun violence and people dedicating their lives, time and energy to trying to reduce the amount of gun violence in our country.
During the research phase we will also produce segments for the documentary we will ultimately piece together and exhibit in the fall of 2014. The length and quality of the documentary will be influenced by how much money we are able to raise in our Kickstarter campaign and how far and wide the we are able to travel for hands-on investigations. The Kickstarter campaign begun on October 19, 2013, and our we are determined to make an impact with the final cut of their documentary. We are resolved to expand the conversation around gun violence and to get young people more involved in our message. More than anything, though, the we are determined to make our communities safer.
- Why is there so much gun violence in the U.S.?
- What can we do to dramatically reduce the amount of gun violence in the U.S.?
